Biography —
Nakomis Merrick is an MA student in the Indigenous Studies program at the University of Kansas. They are interested in researching Indigenous language revitalization for the Umóⁿhoⁿ language as a method of healing historical trauma. Nakomis has been an intern in the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language and Cultural Department for three consecutive summers, developing language learning materials through designing, researching, and recording, such as the Umóⁿhoⁿ Word of the Day. Their aspirations are to continue language work and develop a successful Umóⁿhoⁿ language program that sparks community interest and engagement in revitalizing the language.
