ISP 504 Special Topics: Indigenous Peoples of North America

This course surveys the history of the first peoples to inhabit North America from prehistory to present. Commonly and collectively referred to as American Indians, indigenous peoples include a diverse array of nations, chiefdoms, confederacies, tribes, and bands, each of which has its own unique cultures, economies, and experiences in dealing with colonial and neocolonial powers. This class seeks to demonstrate this diversity while at the same time providing an understanding of the common struggle for political and cultural sovereignty that all indigenous nations face. Indigenous nations that have developed a relationship with the United States will receive primary focus, but comparative reference will be made to First Nations of Canada.

ISP 805 Critical Indigenous Histories & Philosophies in Education

This course examines the history of education with Indigenous populations in both Eurocentric and non-Eurocentric contexts. This includes examining Indigenous knowledges found outside of what is considered mainstream education, critical Indigenous philosophies and frameworks from Indigenous scholars in the academy, the foundations of Native sovereignty in the United States, and pedagogical approaches within Eurocentric and non-Eurocentric spaces. Students will explore these contexts in national, regional, and local place-based understandings.

ISP 807 Internship in Indigenous Studies
By appointment June 2-July 25
Internships provide students the opportunity to obtain training and perform professional duties for academic credit at preapproved indigenous-related agencies, organizations and communities. Students are required to demonstrate a minimum of 60 contact hours for each credit hour earned. May be repeated for credit. Graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Instructor permission required.
